Early days, ‘The Fat Goats’

Will E Blay’s Horrible Lot is both the name of the band AND the name of the backing band that makes up William Blay’s solo music. The line between the two is blurry but there is no denying that both are synonymous with the other. One of Brighton’s more artsy-punk groups, the band started as any other standard band under the name ‘The Fat Goats’ in Hereford in 2019. Peforming around the scene there, the band (fronted by Blay) released the demo EP ‘The Cheds’ in 2022. The band would quietly disband, but Blay would move to Brighton that same year and begin founding his own backing band to play his music live. That band would be The Horrible Lot and they would debut in 2024 at The Bee’s Mouth in March 2024.

Brighton growth, first release

The group would develop a cult following thanks to their performative live gigs reminiscent of theatre and art, with monologuing and ironic segue ways throughout their sets. The band would also sign themselves to Moonrock Promotions, still under the Horrible Lot moniker and becoming managed and associated with the Moonrock umbrella. The group would hit the indie circuit and begin performing around Brighton, but would not release anything. Willy Blay would release the single ‘All She’s Ever Known’, usually associated with his Horrible Lot tenure, under the previous ‘The Fat Goats’ synonym strangely. Regardless, it currently remains the only single released by Blay and/or The Horrible Lot band.
