Acoustic beginnings, formation

Although it bears the name and initials of its frontwoman Marcie Woodroe, its easy to forget that M.Woodroe is actually a band with all hands contributing to the songwriting (reminiscent of the predicament of Sade). And its unfortunate as M.Woodroe quickly put themselves on the local map as one of the greats amongst the art/experimental music scene within Brighton.

A more grungy insured Talking Heads, M.Woodroe originally began in 2023 as the synonym for acoustic song-writer Marcie Woodroe as she performed around the Brighton open mic circuit. In April 2024, she would add in members Ben Elwyn, Jeorgie Pinder-Whiley and Odhran Thomas to turn the project into a full collective in time for their debut performance at The Pipeline supporting Lana Death Ray. In September they would have their very first headline at the Prince Albert, they would then gig around Brighton until April 2025 where they would release their debut single ‘Carte Blanche’ which would be supported by a music video and several Brighton festival slots.

Philanthropy, signing to Venn Records

During this period M.Woodroe would become a band known for their numerous fundraising moments, almost one charity gig a month at minimum for a bit. In October, they would be featured in Small Pond Emerging Vol V with their song ‘Fog of War’ which would receive notable radio play on BBC Introducing Sussex and BBC Radio 1.

Unfortunately, in March they would lose drummer Odhran Thomas as he would stop appearing in promotional material. The band would bring in Sam Sezarin (Sunlifter) as a touring drummer but he would soon be promoter to full member. That same month, the group would also release the ‘Fem-fronted Brighton Band list’ which would act as a definitive list of the many (but not all) bands in Brighton with a female frontwoman. The band would then become connected with Venn Records, who would release their third single ‘Sweetness, Sweetness’ via the label in June 2026.
